Aviation Medical Assessment: Vision Health

Good vision in aviation involves more than reading the smallest line on an eye chart. Pilots need to see clearly at varying distances, accurately distinguish visual information, and maintain healthy, functional vision.

You may be asked to have an eye doctor assess your vision as part of your aviation medical documentation.

What needs to be assessed can vary, so bring any forms, referral information, or instructions you may have received.

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring your current pair and prescription details. Let our team know about any prior refractive eye surgery or other relevant health history when you arrange your appointment.

What to Expect From a Pilot’s Eye Exam

Your eye doctor will assess the areas of your vision requested for your aviation medical documentation.

Depending on requirements, testing may include:

Visual Acuity

We measure how clearly each eye sees at the required distances, both individually and together. If you use prescription glasses or contact lenses, we can also assess your corrected vision.

Your Prescription

Refraction testing determines your current prescription and whether your existing correction is providing the visual clarity you need.

Functional Vision

Your eye doctor may assess eye alignment, focusing ability, and binocular vision to see how well your two eyes coordinate as a team. Testing may also look for problems that could affect how your eyes maintain a single, stable view.

Eye Health

We examine the front and back of your eyes for signs of conditions or diseases that can affect vision. Testing may include an eye pressure check, retinal imaging, or other diagnostics.

Thorough Eye Testing, Clear Next Steps

You came in with a specific task to complete. We’ll keep that process straightforward.

Our team combines careful examinations with modern diagnostic technology and clear explanations, so you know what was assessed and what happens next.
