At Newton Optometry Clinic, we take a warm, kid-centred approach that helps young patients feel comfortable and curious. Here’s how we make children’s eye examinations clear, calm, and engaging from start to finish:
Start the Conversation Early
A few days before the appointment, explain to your child what to expect using simple, positive language. Let them know that our doctor will check how well they see, and that none of the tests will hurt.
Frame It as an Adventure
Describe the visit as a fun science game where they’ll look at pictures, read letters, or follow lights. If they’re getting glasses, mention that they’ll get to try on different frames, like picking out superhero gear for their eyes.
Bring Their Favourites
A favourite toy, stuffed animal, or book can help your child feel more comfortable during the eye exam. Snacks and water are helpful, too, especially for younger children.
Share Important Info with our Eye Doctor
Before the eye exam, let us know if your child has any specific concerns, such as squinting, eye rubbing, frequent headaches, or a family history of vision issues. These clues help guide our testing and recommendations.
Plan Around Naps & Meals
For toddlers and preschoolers, try to schedule appointments during their most alert part of the day, ideally after a meal and before nap time.
Be Reassuring and Stay Positive
Kids look to their parents for emotional cues. Staying calm and positive, especially during parts of the eye exam involving lights or eye drops, can make a big difference.
