The Importance of Early Disease Detection

Eye diseases often progress without noticeable symptoms, making regular eye exams essential for preserving long-term vision. Conditions like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy can cause irreversible damage if left untreated. With early diagnosis and proactive treatment, many eye diseases can be managed effectively, reducing the risk of severe vision loss.

Eye Diseases & Conditions We Treat

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when high blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels in the retina, leading to vision loss if untreated. It’s one of the leading causes of blindness in adults with diabetes.

Symptoms include blurry or fluctuating vision, dark spots or floaters, difficulty seeing at night and vision loss in the advanced stages.

We provide diabetic eye exams to detect early signs of diabetic retinopathy. If necessary, we coordinate referrals for laser treatments or injections to help prevent further damage.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

AMD is a progressive disease that affects the macula, the part of the eye responsible for central vision. It is a leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50 and can impact daily activities like reading and driving.

Symptoms include blurred or distorted central vision, difficulty reading small print, and straight lines that appear wavy.

Using advanced OCT imaging and Amsler grid testing, we aim to detect early signs of macular degeneration before it impacts your vision. Our team provides personalized lifestyle and nutritional guidance to help slow the progression of the disease. If needed, we coordinate referrals for anti-VEGF injections to prevent further vision loss.

Glaucoma (The Silent Thief of Sight)

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause optic nerve damage, often due to high eye pressure. It is known as the “silent thief of sight” because vision loss occurs gradually, often without warning signs.

Newton Optometry Clinic provides glaucoma screenings, including eye pressure testing and OCT imaging, to monitor optic nerve health and detect early signs of damage. Our team offers ongoing management plans, which may include medications, lifestyle adjustments, or referrals for laser therapy, to help slow the progression of the disease.

Keratoconus

A progressive corneal disorder where the cornea thins and bulges into a cone shape, causing blurry vision, glare sensitivity, and frequent prescription changes.

We provide specialty contact lens fittings, including scleral, rigid gas-permeable (RGP), and hybrid lenses, to help improve vision. For progressive cases, we coordinate referrals for corneal cross-linking (CXL), a procedure designed to strengthen the cornea and slow disease progression.
